International Museum Day

May 13, 2019

On May 18 and 19, hundreds of museums across Portugal open their doors to the International Museum Day and the European Museum Night. Admission is free!

The International Museum Day began in 1977 by the hands of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), with the aim of encouraging society to reflect on the role of these institutions. The Museums As Cultural Centers: The Future of Tradition is the theme of the 2019 edition of this fantastic initiative. In Portugal, the coordinator of the event is the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, which challenges museums to prepare a special program for May 18 with various activities, such as theater and dance performances, concerts, cinema, book launches, guided tours, among others. You will surely find something for you.

The European Museum Night was created in 2005 by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. Portugal joined later, offering you the opportunity to visit on May 19, from 6 PM, various museums throughout the country.

In the museums, palaces, and monuments protected by the DGPC, admission is free. From North to South and passing through the Center of Portugal, you will have magnificent options to choose from. If you are looking for a good program for the next weekend, enjoy a trip to the museum with your family!
