Lisbon's Christmas Lights Switch-On This Friday

Nov 27, 2019

The Christmas spirit arrives in Lisbon this Friday, November 29th, with the inauguration of the giant Christmas tree and lights scattered throughout the Portuguese capital. This event will kick off a vast program prepared for the festive season. Warmrental tells you everything!

On November 9th, the Armazéns do Chiado inaugurated the holiday season with the lights switch-on followed by a concert by Saint Dominic’s Gospel Choir. Now, it's time for the rest of the city to get in the mood and celebrate Christmas.

At 6 PM sharp, the Mayor of Lisbon, Fernando Medina, and the President of the Union of Trade and Services Associations, Maria de Lourdes Fonseca, will both be present at Praça do Comércio for the event that will make the city even more magical. Fernando Medina will press the symbolic button for the switch-on of this year's Christmas lights, kicking off the Lisbon holiday season that promises to be packed with fun events.

“A rich, diverse and multicultural program, a Lisbon city brand that, combined with street lighting, seeks to enhance the local commerce and promote the city's public space as a meeting and sharing place,” said Fernando Medina.

In Praça do Comércio, there is a giant Christmas tree 30 meters high but the decorations are, of course, scattered all over the city, with about two million and 350 thousand LED lamps.

After switching on the lights that will give the city even more color until January 6th, a Christmas parade follows from Praça do Comércio to Largo de Camões, passing Rua Augusta, Rossio, Rua do Carmo and Rua Garret.

On December 1st, at Parque Eduardo VII, the doors of Wonderland Lisboa will once again open. With a ferris wheel, several carousels, Santa's village, an ice rink, and lots of local commerce, this will be a magical event for all ages. Access is free.
