The view from Cabo de São Vicente, the main landmark of Sagres, is impressive and breathtaking but the village is also charming with its laid-back vibe and its fine beaches loved by surfers. What To See

Sagres is unlike any other holiday destination in the Algarve which goes to show the richness of the southern Portugal. It is not a resort town, such as Vilamoura or Albufeira. Sagres is remote and natural, featuring dramatic cliffs, raging seas, and natural beaches. One of the main attractions in the region is Fortaleza de Sagres. Sagres' fortress offers a stunning view of the Portuguese coast and of Cabo de São Vicente, located five kilometers from the center of the village. When the Portuguese sailors set out to discover the world, this was the last bit of their country that they saw. Aside from the breathtaking view, here you can also find a red lighthouse that is home to the Museu dos Faróis, a tribute to Portugal's maritime history.

As any other town in the region of the Algarve, Sagres offers a variety of fresh fish and seafood dishes to try. Some of the most popular restaurants in Sagres, that are loved by both tourists and locals, are Vila Velha, Retiro do Pescador, and A Sagres. At any of these restaurants, you can find delicious options that showcase the best this region has to offer.

Smart Tips

Our best tip is to rent a car to go explore the Sao Vicente Natural Park, a protected coastal landscape where you can find remote beaches and admire the natural beauty of this region. You can also take a day trip to Lagos where some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe are located, such as Praia da Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. It's just a 30 minute drive from Sagres and you will be able to discover a different side of the Algarve.
