Madeira, Sustainable Tourist Destination

Mar 16, 2023

Madeira received the “Sustainable Tourist Destination” certification from a world entity. In 2019, the Azores became the first archipelago in the world with this certification, and now it is the Autonomous Region of Madeira to be distinguished. Warmrental tells you everything!

After the distinction of the Azores, Madeira is the new Portuguese region to be recognized as a “sustainable tourist destination,” having received the Silver award from EarthCheck, an international certification body in this area.

“The distinction reinforces the positioning of Madeira as a tourist destination with a focus on sustainable development”, said Eduardo Jesus, responsible for the Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Culture, to the Lusa agency.

In addition to recognizing the work carried out in the four pillars of sustainability - economic, environmental, cultural, and social -, this distinction will have effects on those who live in Madeira and for those who visit it, giving greater credibility to the destination at a global level. "It is a relevant step in the affirmation of Madeira as a 'must-visit' [must-visit destination]", underlined Eduardo Jesus.
