Olhão is one of the Algarve’s most charismatic towns, known for its strong fishing traditions, Moorish-influenced architecture, and gateway access to the stunning islands of the Ria Formosa. Located just 15 minutes from Faro, it offers an authentic Portuguese atmosphere, incredible seafood, and a slower pace of life.
To help you make the most of your trip, Warmrental prepared an Olhão travel guide with tips and top attractions.

Hot, dry, and vibrant. This is peak season for ferry trips to Ilha da Armona and Ilha da Culatra. Expect higher temperatures and a busier but energetic vibe.

Still warm, with pleasant sea temperatures and fewer tourists. It’s an excellent time for exploring at a slower pace. Sunsets over the Ria Formosa are beautiful this time of year.

While it’s not typical beach weather, it’s mild compared to much of Europe and it’s ideal for experiencing everyday life in a traditional Algarve fishing town.

Thanks to its proximity to Faro Airport, Olhão is easy to reach year-round.

The historic centre and waterfront are compact and easy to explore.
Ferries depart from the Olhão waterfront (near the markets and marina) and connect the town to:
Ferries run year-round, with more frequent departures in summer. The crossing usually takes 15–20 minutes, depending on the island and tide conditions. Tickets are affordable and can be purchased at the kiosk near the pier.
For more flexibility, especially outside peak ferry times, boat taxis are available at the marina. They’re faster, ideal for small groups or families, and convenient if you want to return later in the evening. They cost more than the public ferry but offer a more personalized and flexible option.
Recommended if you plan to explore more of the Algarve.
Taxis, Uber, and Bolt are widely available for convenient local travel.

Set along the waterfront, the Olhão Market is one of the city's main tourist attractions. There are two large red-brick buildings and green domes: one sells fresh fish and seafood and the other vegetables and fruit. The most popular time to visit is Saturday morning. Do some shopping and then enjoy a coffee while people watching.
The Nossa Senhora do Rosário Church, at the end of Avenida da República, is located in the center of Olhão. This 17th century baroque church was built with the help of fishermen from Olhão and is worth a visit. If you climb the church tower, you can enjoy a fantastic view!

In front of the Main Church, visit the Municipal Museum to discover Olhão and its material and immaterial heritage.

Near the Municipal Market, make sure you check the replica of the Bom Sucesso Caíque. Back in 1808, 17 fishermen used this boat to sail from Olhão to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, to tell the Portuguese king Dom João VI that the French troops had been expelled from the Algarve.

On the way out of Olhão, visit a salt pan complex where high-quality sea salt is produced. You can also watch the countless water birds or even float in the salt flats at sunset.

Quinta de Marim, in Quelfe, is the space where the Ria Formosa Natural Park Information Center operates. Combining areas of forest, salt marshes, dunes, ponds, and salt flats, it is a perfect example of the different habitats of this stunning natural park.

End a day visiting the city on the long pier of Olhão, with several gardens and terraces where you can watch the sunset over the Ria Formosa. This is also where you can catch the ferry to Armona, Culatra, and Farol.

The stunning Culatra Island stretches for 6 kilometers and is accessible by boat either in the village of Culatra or in the village of Farol. It's very quiet and perfect for a relaxing beach day.

Part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, Armona Beach (Sea) is another of the barrier islands that separate the sea from the Ria. Its waters are calm, and its stretch of sand, as far as the eye can see, is ideal for those looking for tranquility.

Fuseta Island is one of the Algarve's best- kept secrets. It is approximately 10 kilometers from the city of Olhão and can be accessed via ferry. Also, take the opportunity to visit the small fishing village of Fuseta.

Farol Island Beach, named after the characteristic lighthouse behind the beach, is located on Culatra Island and is a little paradise to discover.
Thanks to its location in the eastern Algarve, Olhão makes a great base for exploring.

From Olhão, you can easily take day trips to Faro (15 minutes) to discover its historic old town and marina; Tavira (30 minutes) to explore Roman bridges and charming streets; Loulé (30 minutes) for its traditional market and local crafts; or even cross into nearby Spain (45–60 minutes) for a different cultural experience in Andalusia.
