Alvor

Alvor is a picturesque town in the Algarve. Featuring beautiful beaches to discover and interesting monuments to explore, this fishing village is still off the tourist radar. However, if you're looking for a quiet holiday destination away from the crowds but close enough to some of the most popular cities in the region, Alvor is the place to be. In case you'e planning a trip to Alvor or are debating whether to visit it, WarmRental is sharing everything you can't miss!

How To Get Here

Alvor is located in the western part of the Algarve coast, between some of the most popular towns in the region, such as Portimão and Lagos. The nearest airport is located in Faro, at 75 km from Alvor. By car the journey takes about 53 minutes and you have to follow A22 to EM531-1. Don't count on public transportation from the airport to Alvor since it is very limited. If you don't own a car, consider renting one as it will also be helpful to explore the Algarve.

What To Do

The Algarve is known worldwide for its wonderful beaches and Alvor is no exception. Praia do Alvor is the closest beach to the city center and the sand stretches for miles so you can take the opportunity to go for walks by the sea or play some fun sports, such as soccer or volleyball. Nearby, you can find Praia dos Três Irmãos, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, and Praia do Vau, one of the most popular ones, connecting Alvor and Portimão. One of the best ways to discover some of the most beautiful beaches in the region is to go on a boat tour. You'll be able to see the caves, the stunning coast of the Algarve, and might even spot some dolphins.

Another thing you must do in Alvor, is walk around the village and appreciating its beauty. Explore the cobblestone streets and charming squares and take a walk along the palm tree-lined riverfront. In Alvor, you can also find lots of other fun activities, such as parasailing, paddle, golf, etc. to keep you and your family or group friends occupied and happy!

What To See

For many centuries, Alvor was occupied by the Moorish and up to this day, you can still see its influence in the shape of its castle and medieval churches. During your walk through the cobblestone streets, you might encounter Igreja do Divino Salvador. Built in the 16th century, this church is known for its Manueline style and impressive door decorated with religious symbols, war scenes, and motifs alluding to the fauna and flora of the region. However, the main attraction in Alvor is probably its castle. Built in the 13th century by the Moorish, it survived the 1755 earthquake. If you're curious to know more about the history of the Algarve, head to Lagos or Tavira.

Where To Eat

The Algarve is well-known for its fresh seafood and fish and, once again, Alvor is no exception. Here, one of the most traditional dishes that you have to try is Arroz de Lingueirão but there are plenty other options in case you're not the biggest fan of fish. Some popular restaurants among tourists and locals are Ruccula, A Lota, Salsa Bistro, and Steakhouse Faustino's.
