Albufeira
Albufeira is probably the most popular city in the Algarve due to its warm weather and incredible beaches surrounded by rugged cliffs. It is a former fishing village that evolved into a resort town loved by tourists around the world. At night, the Albufeira is known to be the region's party center so you won't have trouble finding where to enjoy a cocktail or two. If you're thinking about visiting this fantastic coastal destination in the South of Portugal, here is an Albufeira travel guide with everything you need to know to make the most of these holidays in Algarve !
How to get here
Albufeira has a train station 5km away from the city center, with trains coming from other main cities in the country, such as Faro and Lisbon. However, if you're traveling by plane, the nearest airport is located in Faro, 40 minutes away. Then, you can pop in a bus or rent a car to get to Albufeira. As for getting around in the city, you can easily walk everywhere if you're staying in the city center but we highly recommend renting a car so that you can explore the incredible beaches nearby.
What to do
If you're looking for a beautiful beach to sunbathe and swim in Albufeira , the only problem will be to choose one with so many wonderful options. The main beaches in the city are Praia do Peneco and Praia dos Pescadores. However, one of the most beautiful ones has to be Praia de São Rafael thanks to its soft golden sand, clear waters, and breathtaking cliffs from where you can appreciate the amazing view. At every beach, you will find plenty of fun activities to do. When it comes to sports, the Algarve is known for its top-notch golf courses, so if you're into it, make sure you try it for yourself. If you're traveling with family, make sure to visit a water park such as Aqualand (27€) or Zoomarine (23,20€) for a day of fun. However, one of the best activities to do in Albufeira is to take a boat trip (starting at 26€) to visit the impressive caves, such as the famous Benagil. You won't regret it.
What to see
The name Albufeira comes from the Arabic "Al-buhera" which means "castle-by-the-sea". There was once a castle by the sea, indeed, but most of it was sadly destroyed by the 1775 earthquake. On the remains of the castle was built Torre do Relógio, a chapel and clock tower that definitely deserves your visit. The Old Town is another must-see due to its cobblestone streets and Moorish influences, so make sure you wander around to witness its beauty. Moving from this history of Albufeira to leisure, make sure to visit the marina. Stroll around to see the amazing boats and colorful apartments nearby or sit down for a drink at one of the bars.
Where to eat
It won't be difficult to find a good restaurant in Albufeira , especially in the city center. The specialty in the area is fresh fish so make sure you give it a go. We recommend O Marinheiro, Palacete or Dom Carlos, all offer both meat and seafood options and are local favorites.
Smart tips
If you have the opportunity, rent a car while you're in Albufeira and go discover some of the most beautiful beaches of Algarve . Some to add to your list are Praia da Marinha, Praia do Ancão, Praia do Camilo and Praia da Dona Ana. While relaxing on the closest beach to your hotel or vacation rental is wonderful, we highly recommend exploring around to fully experience what Algarve is all about.
